Job Description
The Town of Houlton is seeking a Recreation Director capable of working within a team environment as well as independently. This position involves frequent interaction with the public, community organizations, volunteers, staff, and municipal departments. The Recreation Director is responsible for the planning, organization, promotion, and supervision of recreational programs, special events, and park operations that enhance the quality of life for residents of all ages.
This position oversees the Town’s recreational facilities, parks, seasonal programming, and community events throughout the year, ensuring safe, inclusive, and engaging opportunities across all seasons. The Recreation Director is responsible for developing and managing programs such as youth and adult sports leagues, fitness and wellness activities, special events, camps, and community celebrations, as well as coordinating facility scheduling and usage.
The Recreation Director is responsible for the administration of municipal parks and recreational assets, including playgrounds, athletic fields, trails, and indoor facilities. This position works closely with the Public Works Director to coordinate maintenance within the parks and facilities. Duties include supervising staff and volunteers, preparing and managing budgets, overseeing program registrations and fees, maintaining records, developing marketing and communication materials, and providing staff support to boards, committees, and community partners.
The successful candidate will have strong communication and organizational skills; knowledge and experience in recreation programming, park management, or a related field; the ability to engage and collaborate with the community; proficient computer skills; and a valid driver’s license. Experience in public recreation, program supervision, event coordination, and staff leadership is preferred. CPR/First Aid certification or the ability to obtain certification within a designated timeframe is required.
Compensation is based on qualifications and experience. The Town of Houlton offers an excellent benefit package including options for health, dental and/or life insurances, short-term disability, Maine State retirement, paid vacations, sick time, and 13 paid holidays.
